One of the things I’ve noticed about women in our iBloom community is that we’re often very intentional about our growth.
We LOVE to set goals and create plans. We think about the future. We want to use our gifts well, steward our time wisely, and make a meaningful difference with the life God has given us.
Those are all beautiful things.
In fact, one of the reasons I love the women in this community so much is because we care deeply about living with purpose. We don’t want to drift through life. We want to become all God created us to be.
But every once in a while, I think we need a reminder that a meaningful life is about more than what we accomplish.
As summer approaches, many of us are thinking about what we want to do over the next few months. We’re making vacation plans, organizing calendars, setting goals, and creating bucket lists. There’s nothing wrong with any of that. But in the middle of all the planning, I want to encourage you to consider a different question:
What memories do you want to create?
Because while goals matter, memories matter too.
The Life You’re Building Is Happening Right Now
It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that life will begin after we reach the next milestone.
- After we lose the weight.
- After we finish the project.
- After we launch the business.
- After the kids get older.
- After things finally settle down.
But if we’re not careful, we can spend so much time working toward a meaningful life that we forget we’re already living one.
The truth is that life isn’t waiting for us on the other side of a completed goal. It’s unfolding right now in the middle of ordinary days, conversations, and moments that often seem insignificant at the time.
Years from now, I doubt we’ll remember every task we completed or every item we checked off our to-do list. What we’ll remember are the people who shared those seasons with us. We’ll remember the laughter around the dinner table, the spontaneous adventures, the traditions that became family favorites, and the moments when we were fully present with the people we love.
Those are the moments that become the stories we tell.
Success Is Bigger Than Achievement
I think many women quietly carry a definition of success that is far too narrow.
Without realizing it, we begin measuring our lives by what we produce, accomplish, or achieve. We celebrate the goals we reach and the milestones we hit, but we often overlook the things that can’t be measured on a scoreboard.
The truth is that some of the most important things happening in your life right now will never show up on a productivity tracker.
- The trust you’re building with your teenager.
- The example you’re setting for your children or grandchildren.
- The encouragement you’re offering a friend.
- The conversations you’re having with your spouse.
- The ways you’re growing in your relationship with God.
These things may not feel productive, but they are deeply significant. In many cases, they are the very things that will outlast our accomplishments.
When I think about the women I admire most, it’s rarely their achievements that first come to mind. What stands out is the way they made people feel. Their kindness. Their presence. Their faithfulness. Their willingness to invest in the people around them.
That’s a different kind of success, and it’s one worth pursuing.
Presence Creates the Memories We Treasure
One of the gifts of summer is that it naturally invites us to slow down, even if only a little.
The routines change. The pace shifts. There are opportunities to gather, celebrate, travel, and spend time with the people we love.
My encouragement is not to fill every open space with more things to do.
Instead, look for opportunities to be fully present in the moments already in front of you.
- Put the phone down during dinner.
- Stay a little longer on the evening walk.
- Listen carefully when your child wants to tell you a story.
- Invite a friend to coffee.
- Watch the sunset.
Take the picture—but don’t forget to live the moment too.
These simple experiences may not seem life-changing when they’re happening, but they often become the memories we cherish most.
What Will Matter Most?
Imagine yourself ten years from now looking back on this summer.
What do you hope you’ll remember?
Certainly, there may be goals you’re glad you accomplished. But my guess is that the memories that bring the biggest smile to your face won’t be found on a checklist.
They’ll be found in the relationships you nurtured, the moments you shared, and the ways you chose to be fully present in the season God had given you.
That’s why I believe a truly meaningful life includes both purpose and presence. It includes pursuing the dreams God has placed on your heart while also embracing the people and moments He has entrusted to you today.
Because at the end of the day, success isn’t only about what you accomplished.
It’s also about how you lived, who you loved, and the memories you created along the way.
