Why Your “WHY” Matters
Your WHY Matters! God has planted those desires in your heart for a purpose. He wants to use YOU in a powerful way. But, perhaps there are things coming against you trying to distract you from fulfilling all that God has for you? It might be the criticism of someone, doubts, fears, worries, negative thoughts, etc. I don’t know what it is, but YOU do. You’re feeling it and perhaps you’d rather just quit. Oh friend, I know that feeling. In fact, in my recent blog, I gave you 7 Things to Help You Survive the Hard Days.
Today, I want to take it a step further and specifically talk about your WHY. Your WHY is what drives you to do what you do. And, it’s what keeps you motivated and working toward your goal on those really hard days, those days that you don’t “feel” it, and gives you the extra push even on the days when you’re feeling great.
#1: Discover Your WHY
Get a *pretty* journal and ask God to reveal His plan and purpose for your life as you work through each of the questions below.
- Who do you want to be?
- What would you love to do, but you’re not currently able to do?
- If time or money didn’t matter, what would you LOVE to do?
- What really excites you?
- What would it mean for you to live a life you love?
- How do you want to make a difference?
- What drives you to do what you do?
You’ll want to do this exercise often. Answer these questions (at least) annually because God will continually expand your WHY.
My WHY started just as a desire to make a difference in women’s lives. Then, it was also to provide for my growing family. My most recent version includes all of the previous things, but also a greater desire for healthy living, more time freedom, an iBloom Retreat Center and to be a Philanthropist- making a big difference in nonprofits and individuals. #2: Create a Visual of your WHY
BELIEVE that your WHY is really possible. Close your eyes and envision what success will look like you for and your family. Fill in the little bitty details, so you can really feel what it will be like to live out your WHY.
Create a vision board. A vision board is simply pictures and words that serve as a reminder of your WHY. (Recommended Resource: How to Create a Vision Board). I love to keep a vision board for the year in my iBloom Planner and a more long-term vision board hanging in my office.
Write out your WHY. Take the answers to the questions above and create motivational present tense statements that will remind you of your WHY. Here are a few examples to get you thinking:
- I am healthy, active, and in the best shape of my life.
- I am enjoying the summer and creating memories together as a family.
- I am debt free.
- I am living a life I love.
Post these statements as reminders around your home (mirrors, refrigerator, and doors), office (computer desktop, artwork, bulletin board), and car.
#3: Get Re-Inspired Daily
At the start of each day, read your WHY and look at your vision board. Close your eyes and really feel what it will be like to live into your WHY. On those particularly hard days, you might have to do this multiple times a day (or hour), but it will remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing. You’ll stay focused on the big picture so you can push past through the obstacles, criticism, or lack of motivation and do whatever is necessary to work toward WHY.
Always identify at least one next step that you can take that day to get you closer to living out your WHY. Then, take that step!
