Best Books of 2018

I love to read (and listen) to nonfiction books. In fact, I’m an avid reader, usually consuming at least one book a week. My favorite genres are Christian living, leadership, business, inspirational autobiographies, and personal growth. I decided this year to compile my list of best books of 2018. These weren’t all published in 2018, but it’s when I discovered them. I’ve read each of these at least twice and gifted them to others. Yes, they are really that good!

Grace over Grind: How Grace Will Take Your Business Where Grinding Can’t by Shae Bynes

best-book-of-2018-grace-over-grindGrace over Grind isn’t just one of the best books of 2018, but it’s an all-time favorite book! I have the paperback version, as well as the audio version. It’s a quick read, but so powerful. I had the opportunity to review the book before it was released. My review is included in the book saying: “If you can read one book this year, it should be Grace over Grind! This amazing tool will teach you how to stop grinding your way to success and instead show you how to partner with God. You will ultimately accomplish more than you could ask or imagine.”

I’ve shouted this book from the mountain tops and purchased 100+ copies of this book to give to leaders on my iBloom Health Plexus team. Yes, it’s really that good! It’s a quick, simple read. But, the impact it will have on your life and business is profound.

I have so many favorite quotes from Grace over Grind. In fact, my book is highlighted, dogeared, and filled with post-it notes. However, here’s a great quote that will give you a premise for the book.

“But the cost of a hustle and grind mindset (even if you pray first or say you’re doing it for Jesus) is simply too great for Kingdom-driven entrepreneurs. There is a supernatural realm that many Christian business owners are failing to tap into because they are busy grinding; running fast and furious to accomplish as much as possible, as quickly as possible. This is not God’s best, and if your heart is to see the realities of the Kingdom in your business, your industry, your city, or even the nations, it’s imperative that you create and maintain a lifestyle of working by God’s grace rather than by your grind.” Shae Bynes

If you want to discover how to invite God’s supernatural power into every aspect of your life and business, then I highly recommend Grace over Grind!

The Power of Consistency by Weldon Long

best-book-of-2018-power-of-consistencyThe Power of Consistency is targeted toward sales and business professionals. However, I think it’s an awesome read for anyone with a dream. This the first book that I send my new business builders on my iBloom Health Plexus team.

The author’s story is so incredibly inspiring. At 39, he was living in a homeless shelter after serving 13 years in prison. A 9th grade dropout and three-time convicted felon, he found himself broke and unable to gain employment. After 6 months of knocking on many doors, he landed a sales position and quickly became one of the industry’s top sales leaders. In 2004, he opened his own company; and in 2009, that company was selected by Inc. magazine as one of the nation’s fastest-growing privately held companies.

Here are a couple of my favorite quotes from The Power of Consistency:

“You will learn that your life is a perfect reflection of your thoughts and the things you repeatedly say to yourself. And once you master the process {outlined in the book}, you will find that external forces have very little to do with your business and sales success. You will learn that if you believe you will succeed, you are right; and that if you believe you will fail; you are also right. You will learn that your expectations create the ceiling on your results.” Weldon Long

“When you starting thinking like a success, you start feeling like a success. When you start feeling like a success, you start acting like a success. When you start acting like a success, you start creating successful results. And the next thing you know, you are living your dreams.” Weldon Long

If you want to be inspired and empowered to pursue your dreams, then I highly recommend The Power of Consistency!

High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way by Brendon Burchard

best-book-of-2018-High-Performance-Habits-Brendon-BurchardHigh Performance Habits is a book that I listened to via Audible first, and then purchased the hard copy. Yes, it’s so good that you’ll want both!

This has become one of my favorite books and one that I refer back to often. I love that the entire focus is about having a vision for the future and then developing the skills to accomplish it.

Just like the others, I have so many favorite quotes from High Performance Habits. My book is highlighted, dogeared, and filled with post-it notes. However, here’s a great quote that will give you a premise for the book.

“Just as athletes never quit training, high performers never stop consciously conditioning and strengthening their habits. Real success—holistic, long-term success—doesn’t come from doing what’s natural, certain, convenient, or automatic. Often, the journey to greatness begins the moment our preferences for comfort and certainty are overruled by a greater purpose that requires challenge and contribution. The skills and strengths you have now are probably insufficient to get you to the next level of success, so it’s absurd to think you won’t have to work on your weaknesses, develop new strengths, try new habits, stretch beyond what you think your limits or gifts are. That’s why I’m not here to sell you the easy solution of just focusing on what is already easy for you. Just so we’re clear: There’s a lot of work ahead.” Brendon Burchard

If you’re ready to discover and implement the habits of the most successful people, then I highly recommend High Performance Habits.

An Intentional Life: A Life-Giving Invitation to Uncover Your Passions and Unlock Your Purpose by Karen Stott

best-book-of-2018-an-intentional-lifeAn Intentional Life is a book that I was gifted by the author and publisher. I’m gifted LOTS of books every month and rarely have time to read them right away. And, the same was true with this book. In fact, to be totally honest, I forgot that I got it. However, the night before a plane ride, I was frantically searching my bookshelves for a book to take and God illuminated this book like a neon light. (Not literally, but it was obvious that this was the book I was supposed to read.)

I wish I could adequately describe how God met me through the pages of this book, but needless to say, it was life changing. God used this book to begin the healing process of some deep wounds that I didn’t even realize were holding me back. I had shrunk back for fear of criticism. I had gone from a confident woman ready to be used by God for anything to living in fear of being publicly criticized.

The healing began when I read these words:

“I began to realize that when God speaks a direction into our lives, the enemy will quickly come and bombard us with many voices in an effort to cause confusion and detail us from our destinies. Not all voices are bad, but it does take discernment and prayer to weed through the words. If you’re ever in a similar situation, remember to filter the words of others through God’s character, His Word, and His truths. Take into account where these voices are coming from. Are they random strangers, acquaintances, or a trusted confidant whose relationship with God you can trust? After you’ve filtered the voices and the verbiage, you can keep the gold and throw out the garbage.” Karen Stott

The moment that I stumbled upon these words, I began to sob! I mean, a full on ugly cry in the middle seat of the airplane. In 2017, when I decided to change the direction of iBloom, there were a few dozen strangers and acquaintances who expressed their distaste with my decisions. They sent hateful messages, attacked me publicly on Facebook, and even sent anonymous hate mail to my house. Their words stung deep. I’m sure they’ve totally forgotten what was said and moved on with their life, but the enemy has used the words of people who didn’t even really know my heart to keep me living in fear far too long. I stopped blogging, rarely did a Facebook Live, and dreaded every comment, email, and private message.

All of this was happening even though I had the full support of my trusted confidants, I saw God blessing in HUGE ways, and lives were being changed because of the transition that I made at iBloom. Yet the enemy had me stuck in fear. Well, the fact that you’re even reading this shows how God used this book to impact me. I’m refusing to live in fear and am believing that God will show me where to go and tell me what to say. I refuse to live in fear because I know He is with me.

There are so many other amazing aspects of An Intentional Life. If you want to discover how to follow your passions while still finding joy and meaning, then I highly recommend it!

Thank you so so much for these amazing book selections.
My ADHD is on “SUPERDUPERHIGHALERT” when I am in a bookstore or for some reason, (an office supply store-I love love supplies and pens-lol).
I find it hard to find the right book and usually end up leaving empty handed.
So, I am very grateful for your opinion and suggestions.

One more thing-I am so so so in awe and thankful for your openness, humbleness and honesty when it comes to sharing your real life, feelings,
and situations. I think sometimes we forget some people are human, just like us and also we tend to forget that there Is anyone else in the world, (other than “poor me”), especially when we pull away and push everyone away.

Thank you for being such a Christlike example! You’re a beautiful daughter of our Heavenly Father!!!

    Hugs!
    Lexi
